Long-Term Effects of Antler Water Extract on Bone Loss in Ovariectomized Rats

Abstract

|
|
The goal of this study to determine protective effects of antler water extract against on bone loss in ovariectomized(OVX) rats. Female Sprague-Dawley rats were subjected to bilateral ovariectomy(OVX) or sham surgery. Groups of OVX rats were treated daily with antler water extract(625㎎/㎏, BW) or placebo postsurgery for 6 weeks. Bone mineral density(BMD) of all rats were measured at spine, pelvis, right femur, and tibia, before and the 6th weeks after surgery. At 6 weeks follow-up the OVX group showed a significant decline in BMD at spine, pelvis, right femur, and tibia compared with sham-operated rats, respectively. In contrast, significant increase of right femoral, and tibial BMD was elicited 6 weeks after treatment with antler water extract, respectively. They further indicate that antler water extract merit consideration as possible protector for the prevention of postmenopausal bone loss.
